Dave,
This is an outstanding article.  It tickles me because I know all of the folks mentioned.  I remember when Badlands Bud was a kid, a much younger one, and would run down range to set up knock down targets before the shooter was through shooting!  Then, he would fall asleep in a folding chair until time to run down range again!  At that time, his sister, Sedona Sue was the young gun of the family.  His family lived in Pleasanton/Livermore/Dublin and would drive to where ever we were having the club meetings without a snivel. A truly great shooting family.
I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the FSS.  CAS in that area is still a great sport/novelty.  Here, in WY, since guns are considered tools and everyone has at least two and not considered "taboo" as in CA, CAS isn't the novelty it is in CA. As such, trying to get a bunch of people together to shoot in organized matches is a challenge.  Since WY is running behind the calendar, and that's a good thing, dressing up "cowboy" is the normal garb here.
Can you talk?
When I first got to WY I was truly in culture shock!  I knew it was different than CA...where I was born, educated, bred and lived for a "while" but I didn't expect it to be "that" different.  Consider:
Before leaving CA I bought a set of matching Colt Mustang .380 shooters.  It took over forty days to take delivery...........what with all the crime stopping waiting periods. The day I arrived in WY I bought a Marlin Friendly .22 cal. single shot rifle: cash and carry.  I bought it simply because I could. Its an ugly little shooter, really! It took longer for the clerk to make change than it did for the NICS crap.
A couple of years later I bought three Ruger Birdhead .357 shooters, two blue and one chiny: cash and carry.
One can wear an exposed shooter in town and no one panics except for tourists especially those from England, CA, NJ, MA, etc.  One can get a CCW by filling out an application and paying the sheriff's dept. $85. Most folks pack sans CCW but don't act like idiots.  As they say, "An armed society is a polite society."
When I was "surveying" WY for a possible retirement place I saw stuff that would give most CA folks palsy: American flags flying everywhere, no graffiti, every sign, poster and bill board in English. The Ten Commandments proudly displayed in the park and on the lawn of the Powell Chamber of Commerce. On Sundays the town of Powell is shut save for the two markets, the two hardware stores and the twenty three churches: standing room only.  The thing that made up my mind to move to WY was: while at one of the aforementioned markets, I saw two pickup trucks.  Both had their windows down...it was August of 2K....the keys in the ignition..one was idling...and both had shooters in the back windows. No one gave it a second thought...........Oh, and out here is one gets his butt whipped by his friend, girlfriend, wife or other drunk, unless a "weapon" was used, there are no "anger management" courses, assault charges or any thing else.  You just got your butt whipped....next time keep your mouth shut/respectful!
There are no "rainbow" stickers...if one is "funny" they keep it to themselves and their "associates".  You never hear, "OH!  You can't say that!"  At our cas matches, when we say the Pledge of Allegiance we yell out "under God" and finally, "he needed killin' " is considered a viable defense although rarely successful.
Yes sir, we live cas.
Yours,
Cheapshot

FSS #2
CHJC/WSAS #245
CA State Penitentu.........................never mind.
